I only went to the first crater (at lower elevation). Unlike the Northern Inyo Craters, you get to look into a lake in the middle of this one. And, due to the minerals in the crater, the water is a startling bright green. Not like the green of ocean water. And this water is not clear.
Best to see it in full sun!
This is a quick visit. About one hour, total, from Hwy 395. Begin on Mammoth Lakes Scenic Loop. Then look for the sign that says "Inyo Craters". Then there is a fork in the road. Take the right fork. (The sign was vandalized when I was there, and I wasn't sure what I was getting from my GPS.)
