This and the Five Lakes Trail are our favorite local hikes. The Shirley Lakes hike is stunningly beautiful, somewhat difficult, and offers a treat at the end (you can buy a beer at Squaw's High Camp and hop on the tram ride back down to the base camp). The hike will take about 3 hours to Squaws High Camp, then another 30-45 minutes or so for the way down, so plan accordingly! The trailhead to the Shirley Lake trail is at the end of Squaw Peak Rd, past the Squaw Valley Lodge. The early part of the hike can be crowded (with non-hiker tourists) but this will quickly thin out. As you scale the mountain, keep the creek to your right. Once you reach the boulders, the trail can meander and there are a few small ponds to explore (bring mosquito repellent). Once you get to the Shirley Lake ski lift, head left up the hills to High Camp. Once at High Camp, enjoy a beer and take the Tram back down! This hike is also dog-friendly!
