If you are visiting Carnegie Mellon University, this is a great hotel to stay at, if you want to lodge in luxury near CMU - and just a stone's throw from fine dining along Walnut Street. The hotel is truly a former grand mansion and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The owners have spent a lot of effort to preserve the architectural integrity of the mansion, both inside and out - much of the original millwork and leaded glass windows are preserved, and modern technology and safety are integrated almost invisibly. As a historic architecture geek, I love this hotel. The service was excellent, too. Although "mansion" sounds stuffy, the service is not. Josh, the desk manager, was great (and passionate about the history of the mansion) and the entire staff was super helpful. The hotel is relatively new, and although they are working some minor kinks out (very graciously), we would stay here again in a heartbeat. The Mansion on Fifth lives up to its theme, "where luxury meets legacy."
