We spent two days at the Dusit Thani this past August. This was a fairly self-contained resort, busy and a bit like a Marriott. While we had a fabulous condo, complete with a rooftop pool, the resort itself was not remarkable. (What WAS remarkable was the nearby Amanpuri Resort, where we had an amazing dinner one night. Now THIS is where we would love to stay next time if we can find a way to get a break on their rack rates. Stunning. Private, architecturally fascinating, amazing food, and peaceful. Gorgeous beach). Yet the Dusit Thani is very reasonable, and a good place to stay for a few days, especially if you are with family and have young kids!

A tropical version of the Marriott hotel. Family-friendly with shallow pools, fitness center, table tennis, tennis, a 3-hole pitch-and-putt golf course, lots of activities (tie dye, yoga), water recreation (windsurfing) and more. The waters can be dangerous during the rainy season with a significant undertow and strong waves. Lots of unsightly litter in the sea and on the beach's edge is distracting and you need to watch out for sharp objects. Breakfast is a crowded and noisy buffet affair. Souvenir vendors are on site and the area adjacent to the hotel is a bit seedy with a tattoo parlor and small open shack bars and restaurants, massage parlors, and souvenir shops. We stayed here on our way to Ko Phi Phi Don (Phi Phi Village Resort), which was a bit too far to go in one day from Chiang Mai. We were ready for some tropical waters after Bangkok and Chiang Mai, and the Dusit Thani filled the bill. As a family, we were upgraded from our two rooms to a private villa at no charge. The villa was cavernous (3000 square feet!) with three levels and a peaceful roof-top infinity pool where we spent most of our time. Dinner at the hotel was nothing special, but we also rented a car and ate dinner at the Amanpuri hotel - and that was amazing.
