Our 2003 Audi Allroad transmission finally gave out at 180k miles - somewhat catastrophically. We had warning signs that the transmission was in trouble, but we didn't know the end was so near. Our regular mechanic, Burlingame Independent, recommended Peninsula Transmission. As a mechanical engineer, I couldn't help asking Rico a lot of pointed questions (torque converter vs transmission failure, flushing the transmission cooler vs replacing it, what caused the transmission to fail). I even vetted Rico's answers with online Allroad forum experts as well as our regular mechanic. Rico knows his stuff, and we replaced both the radiator/transmission cooler (which had a small coolant leak anyway) and rebuilt the transmission. Peninsula Transmission did the whole job in a week, and was responsive to our phone calls along the way. The work was costly, but it was still only a bit more than half the cost of the dealer (dealer quoted $7400 based on our VIN, and just for the transmission). I learned a few things from Rico along the way... most importantly, it's a good idea to replace your transmission fluid and filter, and flush your oil cooler every 80k miles, even if the transmission doesn't have a factory service interval. The Audi dealer even confirmed that they don't replace the transmission filter or oil - "sealed for life" they say. Seems irresponsible of Audi. The debris from the 25 clutches in the automatic transmission eventually plugged our filter and oil cooler, and this ultimately led the transmission to overheat and fail catastrophically. Automatics don't last forever, but ours might have lasted longer had we maintained the transmission - even though it is not an official maintenance item. I would definitely use Peninsula Transmission again.
