There are ranger talks at 1, 4, and 6:00. Coming from Bodie, I just barely made the 6:00 one. It was so much fun! We made our own tufas, collected water and looked at little creatures, looked through the ranger's binoculars and saw an oprey nest and ospreys, ate fly larva as the Indians did (I passed on that one), and learned a lot about Mono Lake vegetation, wildlife, and history.
Tufas are rough, rocky spires. You can't see them from the road. So don't miss the ranger talk! I talked to people who went to both the Mono Lake Basin Visitors' Center and this. They said, if you only have time one, choose this.
