On the long drive down 101 between SF and LA you see Camp Roberts. Just beyond the camp exit is the Mission San Miguel which is my favorite mission to visit. It's a very small town so they get few travelers to stop but it is worth your time. What you get is a real sense of how the people lived in the mission. It isn't as restored as other missions so you can almost feel their hardships. Mrs. Hearst helped the mission on some of its restoration so they could keep it open and running as a parish. Take the self guided tour and wander the cemetery. There is a great deli and market down the street so plan to eat there and forgo the fast food along the freeway.
