I'm not so keen on Il Fornaio for lunch or dinner, but I love Il Fornaio for breakfast. Most Il Fornaio restaurants do not serve breakfast on weekdays - only those attached to hotels, like this one. There are three things I recommend to the new visitor, the (1) brewed coffee, (2) eggs benedict, and (3) french toast. I don't usually drink brewed coffee. But here I make an exception - they have their own roast of coffee, and it's a really excellent and flavorful french roast. Next up is their version of Eggs Benedict, called "Uova alla Benedettina", and is the ideal savory breakfast. The two eggs are poached perfectly, and together with smoked ham, are served on a hearty artisan Filone bread that they make in-house. Rather than a Hollandaise sauce, they use a cream-parmesan sauce that works well with the ham and eggs. Add to this some potatoes and grilled onions on the side, and you have a great meal to start your day. The portion is smallish by diner standards, but if you don't want to start the day feeling stuffed, the portion size is ideal. For a breakfast that competes with the best pancakes or waffles, look no further than the "Tosto Francese", or french toast. The Tosto Francese, will put any and all French Toasts that you've ever had before to shame. Be sure to ask for it "with berries". Creative twists are artisan bread, mascarpone cheese instead of whipped cream, and real New England maple syrup. Sit at the bar for a more diner-like experience.
