We used European Auto Works for a pre-purchase inspection (PPI) of a Volkswagen Jetta. Cliff Greenman got us scheduled, took care of all the paperwork, and answered all of our questions after the PPI. Volly (sp?) was the mechanic. Up front, they tell you that they do not evaluate the body of the car - they won't tell you if there was improperly repaired body work. However, they do a great job on everything else (engine, transmission, suspension, safety, etc.). For example, on the car we had them inspect, they identified a punctured spare tire, inoperable windshield washer/sprayer, a cracked dipstick, a vacuum line that had been improperly "repaired" with epoxy and electrical tape, and a weak battery (didn't pass the crank test). They also downloaded all the diagnostic data from the car's computer, and pointed out a number of fault codes and what they mean. They delivered a detailed one-page check list, a detailed one-page estimate to repair everything they found, and a two page printout with fault codes. They test drive the car as well, of course. Cliff answered all of our questions knowledgeably. The inspection is very conservative - the report outlines a worst case scenario of repairs and potential problems. A detailed inspection like this takes time, though. Figure on two hours and $130 to get the car inspected and to go over the report. Not the cheapest PPI, but definitely worth the level of detail.
