We learned about this fantastic program while reading the NY Times a few summers ago. We checked it out and decided to book a family vacation for all five of us (my husband and I and the three kids, at that time ages 19, 17, and 14)! Cyclomundo has many different trips to choose from. As for us, we selected the "Self-Guided Gastronomic Provence tour". We arranged for a 7 night- 8 day, self-guided tour that toured Provence, France. We began in Valence and ended in Avignon. We met our tour guide in Valence and were given bicycles and helmets, detailed maps (in English) and a pre-booked place to stay each night. Our luggage was picked up by Cyclomundo. Thus our sole (but somewhat daunting task) was to cycle 35 to 60 kilometers each day. This was an amazing family adventure. Sure we got lost more than a few times, and we were absolutely exhausted on most days, but the adventure was wonderful. Cycling through lavender fields, experiencing the French countryside in this visceral way, getting to know so many local innkeepers and restaurateurs, practicing our feeble French - it was wonderful.
