Of all the hotels we stayed at in Thailand, this was the most memorable. The two owners and creators of the Rachamankha Hotel are an award-winning Thai architect (Cornell and Yale grad) and a Thai antique collector. Their goal was to create a hotel that has the beauty, calm and serenity of an ancient buddhist temple with the conveniences of a modern hotel. Construction was completed in 2004, and I think they achieved their goal. The rooms are simple, clean and uncluttered, opening up on a central garden with an outdoor living room. There is a large pool area where you can lounge with an adjacent bar and spa. The on-site restaurant serves up tasty Thai and European cuisine. The concierge services are well curated, and many of the staff speak English well. You can rent a car and driver from the hotel to take you anywhere in the area for 1500 baht (about $50) for 4 hours. Aside from the Oriental Mandarin Hotel in Bangkok, service at the Rachamankha was the best we experienced over the course of our two-week travels in Thailand. Harmless geckos abound on the walls of the open areas, and once a very large frog emerged from under a couch while I was reading in the outdoor living area. An architectural feast and a delightful stay. A member hotel of Relais and Chateaux. During the off-season (rainy season), good deals on the rates can be had.
