Caffe del Doge is the real deal when it comes to Italian coffee. It's part of an Italian chain of cafes headquartered in Venice. Everything here is Italian, from the owner (American, but went to B-school in Milano) to some of the staff and often the customers. You can often hear Italian and other foreign languages being spoken - it has an authentic international feeling. Nothing has been Americanized - the sandwiches and the desserts are all what you'd expect to find in a European cafe. You can people-watch from the small european-style tables on the sidewalk. But the coffee is why you come here. Their single espresso Rosso or Nero is a quick pick-me-up with fabulous flavor. For chocolate lovers, try the Robusta al Cucchiaio - chocolate and espresso drink so thick it's practically like pudding, or the Robusta in Tazza if you actually want to drink your hot chocolate. Amazing - trust me (the sugar-caffeine buzz is just as amazing). On Fridays, check out the Bombolinos - these are custard filled donut balls - the perfect match for an espresso. And if you want enough buzz to carry you through the rest of Friday, add a Robusta al Cucchiaio. Nice sandwiches and salads, too.
